Get Boys To Read !

"First Day" by admin on February 27, 2006, 12:03 pm, in category General
It's the beginning of semester two and I'm ready for a challenge!  In my ENG 1P1 class I have 11 boys and 1 girl.  All the boys have said that they don't enjoy reading but when I questioned them further they told me they subscribe to magazines, they read manuals and they often take a look at the local newspaper.  I think my first step is to convince them that they actually are readers and to build on their self confidence.
I took a look at the Grade 9 anthology .....

"Fast and Furious?" by sargeant on November 19, 2005, 7:08 am, in category General
It was a great week and I can't really explain why.  Maybe it was because on Monday morning I started the class by saying "I KNOW we are going to have a great week."  Self-fulfilling prophecy???
Something I tried was they had to write a major assignment based on the movie "The Fast and the Furious".  Yes, I could have chosen a movie with more depth and less violence-more analysis and less "fluff" but I chose it because the kids love it.  My students ha.....

"Oh, I forgot to mention!!!" by bryan on November 17, 2005, 8:37 am, in category General
HI,

I just got out of my grade twelve workplace class and WOW!!!!!  We looked at the Saturday Comics.  We talked about them, and what sorts of things they liked.  It was a fantastic discussion!!  And then we went to task on picking out five comics each in the various issues that I've saved over the last year.  They had to write about what they liked in each of them, what was funny and was there a deeper meaning in them?  ie. a .....

"Life After Report Cards" by bryan on November 17, 2005, 5:08 am, in category General
Over the past few weeks, life has taken on that hectic, yet culminating activity known as report cards.  Marking has finally been caught up and the world has continued to revolve as it should, well more or less.  I'm not sure whether to recommend Death of a Salesman as a really high impact play for grade 12 college.  It worked, and the kids did pay attention, but the detached, semi-glazed eyes were not exactly awe inspired.  Perhaps it was too much Hallowe.....

"Good Day" by sargeant on November 3, 2005, 7:38 am, in category General
Today was a good day for two reasons.  First off, one of my students is a slow reader and as a result he is disinterested in reading.  Reading is difficult for him and he feels frustrated by it so it's easier for him to stare into space with the book open in front of him rather than tackle a difficult task.  In order to help him out, I often ask him if he would like some help.  We have a peer helper and a T.A. that would be happy to read to him or listen t.....

"Pre-writing activites" by sargeant on November 1, 2005, 6:24 am, in category General
My students are reading the novel Holes and in order to get them to see the relevance of the novel to their own lives, I have created a lot of writing activites that will help them in this area.  One writing activity that has worked extremely well is that I have created an assignment where each student writes a letter to the school Principal explaining their views on the school rules and consequences.  My grade 10s have had a long history of behaviour problems in school. .....

"New Techniques" by sargeant on October 31, 2005, 6:14 am, in category General
Sometimes in order to find success, small changes can be just as effective as big changes.  I learned this in my Grade 10 locally developed classroom this week when we worked on character charts.  We are studying the novel HOLES and even though in some ways it is a simple novel, the large cast of characters makes it a challenge for some students.  In order to help them in this area, I created blank charts where they fill in the character name and then information ab.....

"Start of the School Year" by bryan on October 31, 2005, 3:00 am, in category My thoughts
(this blog was orignally posted Sept 2005)

Each year, teachers all over the world wake up to the start of a new year with trepidation and a sense of rejuvenation.  What will the kids be like?  Will I be able to keep them engaged?  Can I be more fun than those beautiful days that seem to appear outside my classroom?

After over twenty years of teaching, I still get anxious.  To make matters worse, my administration often offers me a ne.....

"October 24th" by sargeant on October 24, 2005, 10:44 am, in category General
Starting a new novel study today in my ENG 2L1 course.  Was very disappointed to discover that the entire class had already studied Holes in a previous grade.  Many students had read it more than once AND had seen the movie many times.  How can I expect these students to be enthused about a novel they are already so familiar with!  I was so surprised to discover that all my students were excited about the new unit and no one complained. (a miracle in this .....

"And Now 4 Something Completely Different" by bryan on October 20, 2005, 7:38 am, in category My thoughts
Well, we are into the heart of the courses.  Marks have been submitted for mid-term assessment and the students have settled into the routine of school.  Wait, a minute, I've settled into the routine of school.  Currently, I have two teacher candidates from Queen's University in Kingston and am handing over the reigns of "power" for three official weeks of learning.
Keen, ambitious and energetic these new colleague.....
