Crabbe-Culminating Activity

For this assignment, you will be asked to choose from the list of writing assignments below.  Assignments that are longer and more difficult to complete will be worth more marks than the simpler and shorter assignments.  You may choose any assignments you wish, as long as the total of marks equals 100. For each assignment, you must show your teacher your rough draft that has been revised and edited before you start the good copy. You will receive class work marks for your rough work.

As you complete assignments (rough work and good copy) please hand in.  You are responsible to keep track of what has been submitted and the mark value of the assignment.

1Newspaper Article                                                                                                             20 marks

Please write an article based on one of the key events of the novel.  Your article must be at least 250 words, it must be in proper newspaper article form and style and it must include an appropriate picture.

2Collage and Report                                                                                                           40 marks

Create a collage that is based on the novel.  Choose at least ten pictures of key symbols, characters, setting, themes etc that relate to the novel.  Your collage must also have a title, heading or slogan.  With your collage, include a 150 word report that explains to me why each picture in your collage is significant.

3Letter                                                                                                                                 20 marks

Write a letter to William Bell explaining your opinion on his novel, Crabbe.  What did you like about the novel?  What would you change?  What was your favourite part? Why? Would you recommend this novel to a friend?  Why or why not?  Use specific examples from the text to support your opinion.  Your letter must be at least 250 words long and must be in formal letter style.

4.  Storyboard                                                                                                             30 marks

If you were making the novel Crabbe into a movie, what 10 key events would you include.  Draw or find pictures to represent the scene, assemble them in storyboard format (see teacher for graphic organizer) and write a caption underneath each picture that explains the scene.

5. *Crossword Puzzle                                                                                                             20 marks

Create a crossword puzzle based on the novel, Crabbe that tests the knowledge of the reader.  You must have a minimum of 14 words in your puzzle. You must also include an answer key.

6.  *Board Game                                                                                                                     40 marks

Create a board game based on the novel Crabbe that tests the player’s knowledge of the novel. Your game must have questions based on the novel and the board, pieces etc must be connected to the novel.

 

 

7.  Brochure                                                                                                                            40 marks

Pretend you are William Bell and you have just written Crabbe and you wish to have it published.  Create a brochure that you would send to publishers that would “advertise” your novel.  Make sure you include information about plot, setting, characters, theme etc as well as appropriate graphics.

8.  News Article                                                                                                                      20 marks

Find a news article that deals with the theme of survival.  Summarize the article (what is it about?), explain how it deals with the theme of survival and compare it with Crabbe  Your written assignment should be at least 250 words. You must include the article with your assignment.

9.  Novel Cover                                                                                                                      30 marks

Design a new cover for the novel, In the Heat of the Night.  Make sure your book cover has pictures or graphics that relate to the novel. Please include a 150 word letter to me explaining why your new novel cover is so effective.

10. CD Cover                                                                                                              30 marks

Design a CD cover for the music to the movie Crabbe and write the title song.  You can perform the song for the class if you wish. With your CD cover, please include a paragraph that explains why you chose to design the cover the way you did.

11. Drama                                                                                                                   30 marks

Act out Crabbe in 5 minutes or choose 7 tableaux of key scenes in the novel.  You may ask classmates to participate if you need extra characters.  You must show the teacher evidence of planning and arrange for presentation time to the class. You will need to include props in your presentation.

12.  Map                                                                                                                      30 marks

Draw a map of the place where Crabbe went when he ran away. On your map, clearly mark where at least 7 events took place.  On a separate piece of paper, explain why those 7 events are so important.  Make sure you use colour on your map. (3D objects would also be great.)

13.   Crabbe’s Survival Gear                                                                                      10 marks 

Crabbe decides to go on another “adventure” and he is allowed to take 5 items (besides his canoe and paddle) What 5 items should he take?  Explain in a short paragraph for each, why this item would be so important to him.

14.  Dialogue                                                                                                               10 marks

Write a dialogue (1 page in length) between Crabbe and Mary or Crabbe and his parents that is not already in the novel.  For example, Crabbe tries to convince Mary to come home with him.  Crabbe calls his parents from the hospital to let them know where he is.
