The Crucible-Dramatic Presentations
Individual Topics
1. You are Elizabeth Proctor and you have been asked to give a eulogy at your husband’s funeral. You have the opportunity to explain to the whole community of Salem that John was a moral, upright man who did not deserve to die. What will you say at his funeral? (Remember a eulogy usual consists of a) recollection of fond memories
b) the accomplishments of the deceased and c) what you will miss about them)
2. You are Abigail and the police have finally caught up with you. You are put on trial for adultery, lying and malicious behavior. Just before the jury decides your fate, you are given an opportunity to give a speech in your defense. What will you say to the judge and jury to convince them of your innocence?
3. You are Hale and you are put on trial for falsely accusing residents of Salem of witchcraft. You realize that you are guilty and you are genuinely sorry for what you did. You have the opportunity to talk to the Judge before he sentences you. What will you say to him so he will be more lenient in his sentencing.
4. You are Parris and ten years later you return to Salem to try to make amends for what you did. The residents of Salem meet at the Church and you are given the opportunity to talk to the congregation about what you have been doing for the past ten years. What will you tell them? How will you make amends? How will you explain your behavior during the witch hunts?
5. You are Abigail and you decide to accuse Elizabeth Proctor in court. What accusations do you make? Do you have any proof?
Group Scenarios
1. Set before the actual opening of the play, the girls have met with Tituba in the woods to gossip, “dance” and rebel. (remember the girls live in a Puritan society so their idea of rebellion is different from teen rebellion in the 2000’s) Tie into the scene the infatuation of Abigail with John Proctor, Ruth Putnam’s desire to find out what happened to her siblings who died at birth and Tituba’s feeling of acceptance and importance.
(Group of 4)
2. John Proctor has met accidentally with Abigail in the village after he has broken off their relationship (but before the actual play has begun). Elizabeth shows
up and is not pleased to see the couple talking. What happens next? (Group of 3)
3. Revered Hale, Reverend Parris and Danforth meet some 20 years later and reminisce about the events at Salem. (Group of 3)
4. Ten years after the hangings in Salem take place, Hale is “haunted” by the ghosts of the innocent victims who died because he said there was witchcraft in Salem. Who haunts him? What do they do? How does he react? (Group of 4)
5. Rebecca Nurse, John Proctor and another convicted “witch” discuss their options the night before their hangings? What do they talk about? Do they consider giving a false confession? (Group of 3)
