ENG 2P1 In the Heat of the Night Writing Assignment
For this assignment you will be asked to choose from the list of writing assignments below. Assignments that are longer and more difficult to complete are worth more marks than the simpler and shorter assignments. You may choose any assignments you wish as long as the total of marks equals 80. You may choose to do several of the same assignment (ie: 2 newspaper articles). BY the due date you will submit any of the assignments you have completed. You will not be allowed to hand in any assignments after this date. Each assignment (except for those assignments marked by a *) must have a rough draft, evidence of revision and editing and a good copy. Please hand in your assignment as a complete package rather than submitting each assignment individually.
1. Newspaper Article 20 marks
Please write an article based on one of the key events of the novel. Your article must be at least 250 words, it must be in proper newspaper article form and style and it must include an appropriate picture.
2. Collage and Report 40 marks
Create a collage that is based on the novel. Choose at least ten pictures of key symbols, characters, setting, themes etc that relate to the novel. Your collage must also have a title, heading or slogan. With your collage, include a 150 word report that explains to me why each picture in your collage is significant.
3. Letter 20 marks
Write a letter from John Ball to the director of the movie, In the Heat of the Night that explains his opinion of the movie. Would he approve? Why or why not? Use specific examples from the movie to support his opinion. Your letter must be at least 250 words long and it must be in formal letter style.
4. Essay 50 marks
Write a 500 word persuasive essay on the topic “In the Heat of the Night is a valuable novel to study for it teaches the reader many important lessons about life.” Choose three lessons the novel teaches and explain their significance. Make sure you have an introductory paragraph, 3 argument paragraphs and a solid conclusion.
5. *Crossword Puzzle 30 marks
Create a crossword puzzle based on the novel, In the Heat of the Night that tests the knowledge of the reader. You must have a minimum of 14 words in your puzzle. You must also include an answer key.
6. *Board Game 60 marks
Create a board game based on the novel In the Heat of the Night that tests the player’s knowledge of the novel. Your game must have questions based on the novel and the board, pieces etc must be connected to the novel.
7. * Brochure 40 marks
Pretend you are John Ball and you have just written In the Heat of the Night and you wish to have it published. Create a brochure that you would send to publishers that would “advertise” your novel. Make sure you include information about plot, setting, characters, theme etc as well as appropriate graphics.
8. News Article 20 marks
Find a news article that deals with the themes of prejudice and racism. Summarize the article (what is it about?), explain how it deals with the themes of prejudice and racism and compare it with In the Heat of the Night. Your written assignment should be at least 250 words. You must include the article with your assignment.
9. Novel Cover 30 marks
Design a new cover for the novel, In the Heat of the Night. Make sure your book cover has pictures or graphics that relate to the novel. Please include a 150 word letter to me explaining why your new novel cover is so effective.
