THE TASK: For this ISU, worth _________ of your final grade (half of
that final ______%), you will write three journals on the individual
novel you have chosen and you will create a photo story presentation
(a visual representation) of your novel. The journal writing is Part
I of the ISU worth ________ % and the Photo story is worth _____%. The
photo story of your novel must include a minimum of _________ slides
(including your title page image) slides, two songs, three sound effects,
and _________ slides with voice-overs and captions.
STEPS TO TAKE:
Part I of the ISU: Choose a novel (from the library) or one of your
own and complete the three journals by the assigned deadlines. These
journals will help you keep track of key events, characters, themes
and images that you will want to include in your photo story presentation.
You will have time to read your novel in class and work on your journals,
but whatever is not finished in class must be finished for homework.
Journal #1 is worth _______% and is due: _________________________________.
Journal #2 is worth _______% and is due: _________________________________.
Journal #3 is worth _______% and is due: _________________________________.
Checklist for Journals:
? for each journal entry, indicate the title, the author, and the number
of pages read.
? use the questions from each of the sections to develop a well-organized
journal entry of about _______ words, or about one-page (and a half)
double spaced.
? you must answer all of the questions for each journal, but please
put added emphasis on the ones that are most relevant to your novel
and will be most helpful for photo story.
? you must use at least ______ quotation from your novel in two of
your answers to achieve a Level 4.
? be sure to supply the author’s last name and page number of
the quotation in brackets after each quotation to achieve a Level 4.
JOURNAL #1 QUESTIONS: To be completed during and after approximately
1/3 of the novel is read. (Please note that question #1 relates to the
first two pages of your novel).
1) Read only the first two pages of the novel, and then describe what
you think the writer will be most concerned about in the rest of it.
2) What is the setting of the novel in terms of time and place. Find
a setting that you might like to use in photo story and explain why
you chose this particular setting.
3) What conflict is established in the first part of your novel. Find
two key events that show this conflict which you might use in photo
story and explain why they might be effective.
4) Identify the protagonist and describe the characteristics that he/she
has that might help or hinder him/her in achieving his/her goals. Describe
one other character in the novel so far.
5) Find two objects or images which appear to be important at this point
in the novel (they might be symbols). Explain why you might be able
to use these images in photo story. What song would fit this first part

JOURNAL #2 QUESTIONS: To be completed after reading approximately 2/3
of the novel.
1) Select the chapter that impressed you the most out of this second
section. Briefly summarize the content of your selection and explain
why it “stood out” in the novel. Find two key events from
this chapter which you might use in photo story and explain why they
might be effective.
2) Explain how this section of the novel has affected you. Has it made
you think about problems which you had never considered before? (If
not, explain your response). Where do the characters in this novel go
when faced with problems? Could you use this setting in photo story?
Explain.
3) Identify two themes that you have found in your novel in this section
and support by describing two examples of this theme from the novel.
Explain how you could show these two themes in photo story.
4) Identify the antagonist and describe the characteristics that he/she
has that might help or hinder him/her in achieving his/her goals. Describe
one other new character in this section of the novel.
5) Find two objects or images which appear to be important at this point
in the novel (they might be symbols). Explain why you might be able
to use these images in photo story. What song would fit this second
part of the novel?
JOURNAL #2 is due: ____________________________________.
JOURNAL #3 QUESTIONS: To be completed after you have finished the entire
novel.
1) Explain what this novel has taught you about life and/or human nature.
Identify three themes in this novel which would be helpful to teenagers
(or the world in general).
2) Images are words or phrases that appeal to your sense of sight, hearing,
touch, smell, and taste. Identify three key events that appeal to as
many senses as possible and explain what made them stand out in your
mind. How might you show these events in photo story?
3) What conflicts were present in this section of the novel? Were they
resolved? If no conflicts were included, explain what you feel the author’s
reasons for having his/her story avoid this element.
4) Who was the most important character in this novel? Who were the
two closest people to this main character? Explain why these two characters
had such a close relationship with the main character.
5) Find two objects or images which appear to be important at this point
in the novel (they might be symbols). Explain why you might be able
to use these images in photo story. What song would fit this third part
of the novel?
