“Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” Atmosphere Assignment

Created by Jane McFadden & Brie Worgan

Imagine this.

You have just been convicted of murder and assigned to a maximum security prison. You have never been in jail before. The day has been confusing and exhausting but now it is night and you have been locked in your cell. ‘Light’s out,” has just been called.

You need to make a soundscape that creates an atmosphere that matches the description above. You should include music, sound effects and voices in your soundscape.

The Process:

1.       The class will watch a tutorial on how to make a podcast using Audacity, the Audio Editor and Recorder found in your Courseware. You can refer to this tutorial at anytime at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHgD6cVv9QU.

2.       Your group of 3-4 people will create a soundscape which reflects the atmosphere you feel in the jail. Make sure you have at least:

                     ☐         2 pieces of music

                     ☐         6 sound effects

☐         3 different voices (Ms McFadden has microphones for you to use)

Sound effects can be found at http://www.findsounds.com/ISAPI/search.dll

Music can be found at http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/ or you can download your own. Different group members may contribute the voices or one person’s voice may be manipulated using the Audacity software.

3.       After you have completed your soundscape, your group must continue the podcast by explaining what atmosphere your group tried to create.

☐         Rebroadcast each sound by copying and pasting it.

☐         Make a one sentence statement for each sound explaining how it added to the atmosphere

4.       The last thing in the podcast should be your group’s rating on how effective the soundscape was. Explain your rating.

5.       Mark your group members in the space provided (beneath your Rubric)
