Podcasting Part 2:    Dramatic Reading

Students will choose a portion of a novel they have read in class, create a script, and then a dramatic reading of it will be made with podcasting software.

Step One:    Choosing

Choose approximately a one page portion from any independent novel you’ve read.

Step Two:    Planning

Brainstorm the following:

-possible music that could be playing in the background while you read the text

-all of the times where you could incorporate sound effects

-any possibilities to alter your voice, or add effects such as echo, fade, etc.

Step Three:  Script Creation

Re-write the portion of the novel, and in [SQUARE BRACKETS] include all of the options you brainstormed in the appropriate places in the text.  Do this in pencil, because you will likely not be able to use them all, or make changes and additions as you get going.

Step Four:   Practise, practise, practise!

Your reading comprehension will be determined through your expression, emphasis, pacing and timing, so ensure you have a strong understanding of the text and its meaning.  Also, this is a dramatic reading, so OVER-DO it a little and add in the appropriate drama to add interest for your listener.

Step Five:    Make changes

Now that you’ve practiced, do back to your ‘script’, and put the parts that you want to emphasize in CAPITAL LETTERS.  Put the cue [PAUSE] where you need to momentarily pause, and all of the other cues needed for you to best understand your script while you’re reading it.

Step Six:     Final Rehearsals

Go over your script to polish it.  Make sure your voice is clear, and you’re able to read the text without stumbling over your words.

Step Seven: Recording

Record your podcast.

Step Eight: Jazzing it up

Incorporate the appropriate music, sound and voicing effects, and include them in your podcast.

Step Nine:  Polishing

Listen to your podcast a few times over and ensure it’s clear, concise, filled with lots of expression and has all of the required sound effects, etc.  If there’s time, ask a friend to listen to your podcast and make suggestions for changes.

Step Ten:     Performing!

Instructions:

Students will choose any novel they’ve read this term to create and record a creative podcast.  They must either choose a scenario from the chart provided, or conference with the teacher to create a new scenario specific to their novel.  Students will first create a script, then record their podcast and integrate music, sound and voicing effects.
